Benjamin Butterfield – tenor

Benjamin Butterfield, tenor, Canadian-born, he studied voice with Selena James at the Victoria Conservatory of Music, British Columbia, and at the Banff Centre for the Performing Arts. After graduating from McGill University in Montreal, he received grants from the Canada Council to continue his studies with Diane Forlano and with Léopold Simoneau. As a concert singer, Benjamin has worked with such noted conductors as: James Conlon, Charles Dutoit, Sir Andrew Davis, Leonard Slatkin, Bruno Weil, Jukka-Pekka Saraste and Seiji Ozawa. His repertoire ranges from the Oratorios and Passions of the Baroque and Classical era through to 20th-century works. He has appeared at the BBC Proms, Carnegie Hall, Het Concertgebouw, L’Accademia Santa Cecilia and at the ancient Greek amphitheater in Epidauros, as well as in the Washington, San Francisco, Boston, Houston, Toronto and Detroit Symphony Halls. On the operatic stage he has made appearances in Montpellier, Toulouse, Houston, Arizona, at the San Carlo in Naples, Toronto, Vancouver and Montreal and toured with the New York City Opera, Welsh National Opera, Canterbury Opera of New Zealand and with Canada’s Opera Atelier throughout Italy, Switzerland, France and Germany. Benjamin’s selected recordings to date: Britten Serenade (CBC Records), Britten Canticles (Marquis), Opera Encores with the Canadian Opera Company (CBC Records), Bach Cantatas and St. Matthew Passion (Koch International), Roussel Psalm 80 (Timpani). Benjamin is currently Head of Voice at the University of Victoria.
